About CArol
I’m Carol Killman Rosenberg
It feels like perpetual summer vacation in Boca Raton, Florida, so that’s where you’ll find me, working from my home office as an editorial specialist for both traditional publishers and independent authors.
Before I launched my own editing and book-packaging business in 2012, I was the managing editor of HCI Books, a Florida-based trade book publisher best known for the original Chicken Soup for the Soul series and other popular bestsellers. HCI recruited me in 2006 to develop and implement book production protocols—from manuscript to printed book—and to liaison with art and design, publicity, marketing, sales, and printing. While at HCI, I also adopted the role of acquisitions editor, with the NY Times bestselling memoir iWant: My Journey from Addiction and Overconsumption to a Simpler, Honest Life by Jane Velez-Mitchell to my credit. The esteemed Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Dr. Jane Goodall endorsed one of my most prized acquisitions, Etre the Cow by Dr. Sean Kenniff. I am also the cocreator and coauthor of The Jon & Jayne Doe Series, published by HCI Books, along with my husband, Gary Rosenberg, who has specialized in book design and production for the past twenty-five years.
Building a Business at Home . . .
Prior to being recruited by HCI, I was the offsite managing editor of Basic Health Publications, Inc., of Laguna Beach, California, which specializes in alternative health and fitness books. From our home office, Gary and I managed all aspects of the editorial and production process of more than 200 titles for Basic Health since its inception in 2001. During this time, I also had the pleasure of editing for Square One Publishers, an independent trade book publisher based in Garden City Park, New York, and worked on such diverse topics as the I Ching, blackjack, weight-loss surgery, magic, numerology, humor, herbs, retirement, and public speaking.
Where It All Began . . .
I began my career in publishing as an associate editor at Avery Publishing, a highly successful, cutting-edge alternative health book publisher in Long Island, New York. When Penguin-Putnam acquired Avery Publishing, I was recruited to work in Penguin’s copyediting department as the alternative health book specialist. In this position, I was also able to seize the opportunity to work on fiction titles published by Penguin, Viking, and G.P. Putnam & Sons.
My Life Before Book Publishing and Now . . .
Prior to my career in book publishing, I was a clerical supervisor for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and later a legal assistant and office manager for a law firm in New York. I hold the rank of black belt in Shotokan karate and placed first and third in two national championships. More recently, I studied American Kenpo, a system of self-defense, for seven years before retiring from martial arts training. My hobbies include hiking, crafts, pencil drawing, and butterfly gardening. My passion is the written word. My family and I moved from Cedarhurst, New York, to Boca Raton, Florida, in 2003, where we happily settled into a wonderful community of friends and family.
“What I love most about the editing process is being invited into an author’s mind and viewing the world from his or her perspective. It’s a journey that I embrace with delight and passion. It’s an opportunity to use my intuition, discernment, and talent in a creative and rewarding way. I always appreciate my authors for the wisdom and knowledge they impart to me through their work.”
