About CArol

I’m Carol Killman Rosenberg

It feels like perpetual summer vacation in Boca Raton, Florida, so that’s where you’ll find me, working from my home office as an editorial specialist for both traditional publishers and independent authors.

Before I launched my own editing and book-packaging business in 2012, I was the managing editor of HCI Books, a Florida-based trade book publisher best known for the original Chicken Soup for the Soul series and other popular bestsellers. HCI recruited me in 2006 to develop and implement book production protocols—from manuscript to printed book—and to liaison with art and design, publicity, marketing, sales, and printing. While at HCI, I also adopted the role of acquisitions editor, with the NY Times bestselling memoir iWant: My Journey from Addiction and Overconsumption to a Simpler, Honest Life by Jane Velez-Mitchell to my credit. The esteemed Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Dr. Jane Goodall endorsed one of my most prized acquisitions, Etre the Cow by Dr. Sean Kenniff. I am also the cocreator and coauthor of The Jon & Jayne Doe Series, published by HCI Books, along with my husband, Gary Rosenberg, who has specialized in book design and production for the past twenty-five years.

Building a Business at Home . . .

Prior to being recruited by HCI, I was the offsite managing editor of Basic Health Publications, Inc., of Laguna Beach, California, which specializes in alternative health and fitness books. From our home office, Gary and I managed all aspects of the editorial and production process of more than 200 titles for Basic Health since its inception in 2001. During this time, I also had the pleasure of editing for Square One Publishers, an independent trade book publisher based in Garden City Park, New York, and worked on such diverse topics as the I Ching, blackjack, weight-loss surgery, magic, numerology, humor, herbs, retirement, and public speaking.

Where It All Began .  .  .

I began my career in publishing as an associate editor at Avery Publishing, a highly successful, cutting-edge alternative health book publisher in Long Island, New York. When Penguin-Putnam acquired Avery Publishing, I was recruited to work in Penguin’s copyediting department as the alternative health book specialist. In this position, I was also able to seize the opportunity to work on fiction titles published by Penguin, Viking, and G.P. Putnam & Sons.

My Life Before Book Publishing and Now .  .  .

Prior to my career in book publishing, I was a clerical supervisor for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and later a legal assistant and office manager for a law firm in New York. I hold the rank of black belt in Shotokan karate and placed first and third in two national championships. More recently, I studied American Kenpo, a system of self-defense, for seven years before retiring from martial arts training. My hobbies include hiking, crafts, pencil drawing, and butterfly gardening. My passion is the written word. My family and I moved from Cedarhurst, New York, to Boca Raton, Florida, in 2003, where we happily settled into a wonderful community of friends and family.

“What I love most about the editing process is being invited into an author’s mind and viewing the world from his or her perspective. It’s a journey that I embrace with delight and passion. It’s an opportunity to use my intuition, discernment, and talent in a creative and rewarding way. I always appreciate my authors for the wisdom and knowledge they impart to me through their work.”

What Clients Say

“The ability to listen, the mastery of the English language, her discerning mind, and her loving heart are not just the qualities that make Carol Killman Rosenberg a great editor, but a joy to work with. Through the back and forth dialog during the editing phase of my manuscript, she helped me find the center of my tangential message that gave shape to my book, The Five Levels of Attachment. I look forward to working with Carol again on my next project, and I recommend her to my friends who are entering the editing phase of their book.”

don Miguel Ruiz, Jr., author, The Five Levels of Attachment

What Clients Say

“Collaborating with Carol Rosenberg was my first experience working with an editor for what was to become a published book. She was the final editor for the collaborative textbook, Yoga Therapy and Integrative Medicine: Where Ancient Sciences Meets Modern Medicine created by Larry Payne, PhD., Eden Goldman, DC, and myself. It could not have been a better experience! She was always patient, kind, gave important feedback, and was clear in her direction. I always agreed with her editing choices and found her fun, friendly, and incredibly professional all at the same time. It would be an honor to have Carol edit any future works. I hope to share the experience again.”

Terra Gold, co-author, Yoga Therapy & Integrative Medicine

“Carol Rosenberg’s developmental editing of my Meditation Now: A Beginner’s Guide manuscript was truly outstanding. Immediately I trusted in her capacity to honor my voice and vision – while at the same time finding ways for the text to blossom even more beautifully. Though we were working with a very tight deadline, always she was kind and courteous, inspired and fully committed to the process. In a word (or six): truly a joy to work with!”

What Clients Say

“Carol Rosenberg is an answer to my prayers. She has the ability to keep my voice throughout while she polishes my work. She is responsive, timely, reliable, and truly a gem! She was my editor for Chakra Awakening, the Angel Gemstone Oracle Cards, All About Smudging, and two other titles in the publishing pipeline as I write this. She makes me look good! I am so grateful.”

Margaret Ann Lembo, author, Chakra Awakening and others

What Clients Say

“Editing is an art, and Carol Rosenberg has mastered it. With wit, patience, and a well-sharpened pencil, Carol has guided me through two books, one of which became a New York Times bestseller. Carol is all about the work. Her mission is to get the unique story that’s buried in the writer’s psyche onto the page in a way that’s compulsively readable and relatable! Carol’s gift is her self-lessens. One never gets the sense that she is trying to impose her thoughts on you. I consider myself blessed to have had the opportunity to work with Carol. I learned so much from her, and I would highly recommend her to any writer!”

Jane Velez-Mitchell, author of the NY Times bestseller iWant: My Journey from Addiction and Overconsumption to an Honest, Simpler Life and Addict Nation: An Intervention for America, and host of Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell on HLN

What Clients Say

“Carol picked up my writing voice in such a way that sometimes I thought I did it. She developed my manuscript into an Amazon Bestselling book. Never did I think it would develop as it has, and that is because of Carol’s unparalled skills in editing. I recommend her to everyone who asks me about editors!”

Jake Ducey, author, Into the Wind

What Clients Say

“Carol Rosenberg was invaluable in the development of Love Addict: Sex, Romance, and Other Dangerous Drugs (HCI Books, 2011). Her sharp objectivity help me structure and present a complex topic in an accessible and entertaining way. She is an excellent communicator; not only does her feedback make sense, but she is able to create a dialog to bring a concept to its highest and best form. This book would have been half as good without her. I could not recommend her more highly.”

Ethlie Ann Vare, author, producer, and humorist

What Clients Say

“While working together on my novel, Être the Cow, Carol was not simply my editor—she was my full artistic partner. Without her unwavering support and passion for my work, Être the Cow could never have been brought to market. Every detail of my book bears Carol’s hallmark creativity—from the crisp, nuanced writing style, to its minimalist design. Carol’s editorial insights and book packaging skills are unmatched in the publishing industry, and I am forever grateful for her courage and her knowledge.”

Sean Kenniff, author, Être the Cow

What Clients Say

“As the editor of my first book, Can I Get a Do Over?, Carol Rosenberg was equal parts mentor, creative partner, critic, psychologist, and empathetic friend. And believe me, I needed them all. Carol’s like a music producer with a great ear for ‘just the right sound.’ She took a group of good stories and helped transform them . . . into a beautiful book. I am forever grateful.”

Rick Domeier, author of Can I Get A Do Over?

What Clients Say

“Carol Rosenberg is a phenomenal editor. She edited the book I wrote when I was 15 and transformed it into a practical fitness book while maintaining my thoughts and my personal spirit. She was an overall wonderful person to work with. Our relationship became more a friendship than strictly business because I felt that she cared about me as a person, as well as the success of the book. She has a passion for her work, and it shows in how she treats writers and in the finished products.”

Taylor LeBaron, author of Cutting Myself in Half: 150 Pounds Lost, One Byte at a Time

What Clients Say

“Working with Carol Rosenberg was both a challenge and a pleasure. She encouraged us to stretch our abilities and improve our manuscript’s format, structure, and writing. And throughout the process, she maintained a relaxed, positive relationship and made the editing process fun. Her genuine passion for producing an excellent book was contagious. She not only believed in the project; she also backed her belief with dedication and commitment. We felt that we had a true partner throughout the editing process with one crucial exception: She allowed us to retain complete ownership of the project. Carol has the extremely rare gift of improving a manuscript while keeping the writer’s voice. Our book was one hundred percent improved by Carol’s talent and expertise.”

Jack and Mary Branson, coauthors, Cutting Myself in Half: 150 Pounds Lost, One Byte at a Time

What Clients Say

“I would have slept better at night if I knew Carol Rosenberg would be editing my book once I finished writing it. She’s incredibly intelligent, creative, and seeks to collaborate on a project rather than control it. I trust her implicitly with my work.”

Gabe Berman, author, Live Like a Fruit Fly

What Clients Say

“Carol Rosenberg is an extraordinary fiction editor. She negotiates the minefield that lies between a writer’s vision and the changes necessary to improve her project with amazing ease. She is creative, positive, energetic, intelligent, and, in short, is a joy to work with.”

J. Gabriel Gates, author, The Sleepwalkers, Dark Territory, and Ghost Crown

What Clients Say

“Every author completes a book with a sense of joy and accomplishment, and Carol Rosenberg has a unique talent for improving the quality of the work without deflating that marvelous feeling. She is the best editor I’ve had the privilege of working with, bar none—and as the author of over a dozen published novels and how-to books, I have plenty of grounds for comparison. In writing Dark Territory and Ghost Crown (with my incomparable partner J. Gabriel Gates), the most valuable insight I got from Carol (and always expressed with caring and respect), was that readers can’t see what’s inside my head unless I paint an indelible verbal picture with my words. She has made me a better writer and I look forward to working with her as we continue The Tracks series for HCI Teens.”

Charlene Keel, coauthor, Dark Territory and Ghost Crown

What Clients Say

“I am blessed that Carol Rosenberg was my editor. Her expertise and insight on my first book provided a wonderful learning experience. Her warm and caring manner made the journey to the finished product a rewarding experience. She was by my side when the first copies were bound, and her enthusiasm and passion made for a memorable occasion. I feel fortunate that Carol was my editor. I hope that I have the opportunity to work with her again in the near future.”

Marsha Engle, author, 100 Sounds to See

What Clients Say

“As my in-house editor at HCI, Carol accomplished the impossible for me; three books, three different genres, all released on the same day. Wait it (she) gets better . . . all three made it to #1, #2, and #5 on Amazon.com in their respective genre! If you are thinking of using Carol for your literary needs, as an author of five books who has experience with more than one editor, I can say without hesitation that Carol is the absolute best.”

Frank McKinney, five-times bestselling author, http://www.frank-mckinney.com

What Clients Say

“Carol Rosenberg’s remarkable editing skills and superb guidance are the reasons why The Medium Next Door shot to #1 on Amazon’s Bestsellers Rank in its category and continues to hold a top ranking. Throughout the editing process until the very last detail was completed, Carol acted as my mentor, book coach, and editor. She took a very rough manuscript and brought it to life. I’ve worked with other editors, and none can compare to Carol’s attention detail, structure, flow, and grammatical genius.”

Maureen Hancock, author, The Medium Next Door, and internationally known spirit medium and star of Style Network’s Psychic in Suburbia

What Clients Say

What Clients Say

“Carol Rosenberg was a God-send. She arrived late on our project and worked with us quickly and gracefully to meet all deadlines and to move our publishing project forward. She understood the contexts and relationships that needed special care and always kept the end in sight. She was a gift to work with.”

Judy Rodgers, author, Something Beyond Greatness

What Clients Say

“I had the opportunity to work with Carol Rosenberg on two very important book projects, The White House Boys: An American Tragedy and A Better Yesterday: Living Life After Abuse. In the past years, I have worked with several noted Hollywood actors, directors, and producers. Yet, to this day, I have never worked with anyone who has the personal dedication of Carol Rosenberg. More important to me is that she truly cared about me and the projects we were working on. In the middle of some very tight deadlines, she always had time for a smile and a joke to break the strain and stress of the situation at hand. Once the projects were complete; she always had time to send a personal note of concern. I also admired that she never tried to take credit where credit might even be due. This is a rare quality indeed.”

Roger Dean Kiser, Sr., author/child advocate

What Clients Say

“Carol Rosenberg was my editor for a ‘how-to’ book on addiction and recovery that I recently ghostwrote for HCI Books. Carol was a delight to work with. She offered the kind of keen editorial insight on structure and content that any writer hopes for while always being respectful of the author and my writing style and vision for the project. Carol’s input about the addiction market and HCI readers in particular helped me shape and organize chapters, add exercises, and make sure the author’s message was consistent, specific, and easy to understand. I highly recommend Carol to any publisher or writer looking for an editor who sees the big picture, can shape material, and get a book ready for publication.”

Gina Gold, ghostwriter

What Clients Say

“Carol Rosenberg was the editor and project manager for two books that I coauthored, Nutrient Timing and The Performance Zone. Both of these books were published on a fairly tight deadline and therefore it was essential that the editor and I have a close working relationship. Carol brought enormous insight and sound editorial criticism to these projects. She is a delight to work with. The editorial process works best when there is strong respect between the editor and the author. The net result is truly an enhanced product. Carol brings exceptional value to the process. She is one of the best editors with whom I have worked. I hope I have the opportunity to work with her again in the future.”

Dr. Robert Portman, President & CEO of PacificHealth Laboratories

What Clients Say

“There is no other word to describe Carol Rosenberg’s editing abilities, but masterful. She worked on my book, Waking the Warrior Goddess: Dr. Christine Horner’s Program to Protect Against and Fight Breast Cancer, which was released in 2005. My book won the IPPY award for the ‘Best book in health, medicine and nutrition’ for 2006. I attribute part of that award to Carol’s superb editing. . . . I can’t highly recommend Carol Rosenberg enough. She is obviously brilliant and was an absolute pleasure to work with.”

Christine Horner, M.D., author, Waking the Warrior Goddess
